Our methodology is based on the previous experience that journalists and media-organizations in Armenia and Azerbaijan have gained by working together on the joint projects. It can be fairly called ‘the foundation’ for the training. Azerbaijani and Armenian media-organizations have established initial contacts as early as in the mid-90s. The meetings were very intense given the alienation and isolation that came along with the Karabakh conflict. Crisis communications are considered to be a necessary skill in peace building process. This portion of the training was focused on developing strategies for determining what information is appropriate to disseminate at each stage of a conflict, how information campaigns can be used to reduce tensions, and the use of new media to limit the spread of ethnic conflict.

Медиация богата многовековой историей, ее эволюционные корни уходят в глубокую древность. Как только появился человек, вернее три человека, родилась медиация, поскольку групповой образ жизни невозможен без конфликтов. Преодолеть противоречия сторон можно только путем примирения, в противном случае конфликт может, перерасти в междоусобицу или в войну.
Примирение в древности и по сей день является процедурой сложной, деликатной, требующей мудрости и большого опыта, поэтому примирителями в прошлом, начиная с каменного века, были люди уважаемые и мудрые: вожди, жрецы, аксакалы, старейшины, духовники.

 Participation of a third party in the conflict settlement is an important factor affecting the effectiveness of its resolution. Settling a conflict means settling the contradictions between the opponents with participation of the third party. Such activity is usually called mediation. Mediation is a special type of activity, which optimizes the process taken by the conflicting parties to find the decision of the problem with participation of the third party. Such a decision would allow stopping the conflict.

 Когда закончилась холодная война, ведущие государства впали в состояние беспечной эйфории. Казалось, что конфликтам и войнам положен конец, и Земля получит наконец передышку. Но внутренние войны и конфликты внутри государств начали расти как снежный ком, количественно и качественно.
Поток насилия не иссякал, но приобретал более жестокие и бесчеловечные формы. Это наводило на мысль о том, что война, как и преступность органически присущи человечеству, а мир и ненасилие – суть недостижимые утопии.

The event was held in the framework of the project “Peacebuilding through open media”, which was aimed at multi-level teaching of the press and online media journalists for primary methods of reporting on ethnic diversity. Ultimately, the purpose was to teach for some elements of conflict journalism and debates, for technics of crisis reportage and usage of media tools enable rehabilitation of the post-conflict society. |

 The idea of the Network of Social Mediators had emerged prior to tragic Osh events of summer 2010. Back then I had been meeting with the representatives of different communities from Osh and Jalalabat oblasts, where the atmosphere of tension was already there and it was clear that the activists had been looking for the ways of regulating the upcoming conflict situation.
